Real Wedding – Athanasia & Jonathan, Toorak VIC
All-over elegance, that’s how we would best describe Athanasia and Jonathan’s gorgeous Melbourne wedding.
While plans to wed abroad in Greece went awry after a family member falling ill, this loved-up pair decided to bring the European vibe to iconic Albert Park venue, Carousel.
Not only did Athanasia shine in her Capellazzo Couture gown, the impressive styling, coupled with the obvious emotion from every guest, made this day one to remember.

In Athanasia’s words…
The meeting.
Jonathan applied for a job at my work in 2011 and it was love at first sight. Within three months we started dating and the rest is history.
The ‘One’.
Two moments stand out for me. The first one is when we both realised that we loved each others company more then anything and secondly, when I met his family and felt like I knew them for a lifetime, they are the most generous people and they accepted me immediately with open arms.
The proposal.
Jonathan booked a getaway to Peninsula Hot Springs on a Sunday in June, the day before we were due to leave for Europe. I was sceptical about the fact that he may pop the question but he had all bases covered by letting the closest people around me know his plans and they managed to convince me that he just wanted us to wind down before a long flight. After an incredible day at Peninsula Hot Springs, Jonathan booked us a room at Moonah Links and that is where he proposed. The best part was he was so nervous when he got down on one knee that the ring was upside down.
The process.
I started planning as soon as we got engaged which was just over a year in advance. I immediately booked our reception, photographer, videographer, cars and Sonia Cappellazzo. Jonathan’s suit, the groomsman’s suits and the bridesmaid’s dresses were organised in August as they were all custom made. I had some difficulties with finding the right florist because they were either unavailable or they didn’t quite nail the brief. Luckily, I was recommended Brett from Flowers by Brett Matthew John and he was available to be apart of our day. Stationery and hiring process commenced in October so I could have all invitations posted by early December. The lead up was very smooth and all our suppliers took control and made it a no fuss event.
Style inspiration.
We really wanted to get married on a small island in Greece, but then my grandmother fell unwell so we decided to bring the European vibe to Carousel instead.
The dress.
I always knew Sonia was going to create my dress, it was a no brainer, she is incredibly talented and so fashion forward. When I walked into Sonia’s Couturier all I said to her was ‘I don’t want a straight dress, I can wear a straight dress to anyone’s event’. I didn’t have any inspiration to show her, we just started creating a masterpiece together, along with my mum and my sister. My dress was inspired by my ballerina background and the pink somehow just came about which was perfectly hand-died by Sonia. The bodice was also hand beaded, with all the beads strategically placed so that we could create a shear yet beautifully elegant bodice.
Favourite moments.
I had tunnel vision as soon as I laid my eyes on Jonathan for the first time at the ceremony, my cheeks were sore from my huge smile. A wedding is nothing without your loved ones around you, so seeing everyone we love in one room celebrating filled our hearts.
Meaning of marriage.
A commitment, a lifetime partnership and sharing life with your best friend every single day!
Wedding soundtrack.
Aisle: Blessed by Daniel Cesar
First dance: Pineapple Skies by Miguel
Planning surprises.
How quickly suppliers can book up, even when you are planning over a year in advance it can still be very hard to find the suppliers you want to be available.
Words of wisdom.
Every single person told me the wedding day comes and goes so fast. So when the wedding day was approaching we celebrated everyday for an entire month. Whether it was at home having a wine or out with family and friends, it made the lead up even more special. So I highly recommend every couple celebrates and soaks up all the love around them.
When the process gets stressful, embrace it – it only happens once!
