Real Wedding – Dan & Lauren, Richmond VIC

Mountain Goat brewery in Richmond was the perfect venue to host Dan and Lauren’s relaxed, industrial wedding.

Blooms in white and cream and lush green foliage contrasted seamlessly against the  brick and concrete space, but the most beautiful styling elements were in the sentimental touches Lauren added her self. This chapter of Dan and Lauren’s love story was captured perfectly by Oy Photography.

In Lauren’s words…

The meeting.

We met 5 years ago at a pub while out with friends. It was very random really, his friend initially got talking to one of my friends and we were subsequently introduced.

The proposal.

Dan proposed at Christmas time two years ago. I’m pretty Christmas crazy as it is, so he’d planned to do it on December 1st when we set up the Christmas tree. Only I had unknowingly disrupted the plans when I insisted on putting the tree up early! I should have known something was up though because he’d never been so keen to help! Once we finished, he said he had to put the first present under the tree right away. I carried on cleaning up and turned around to see him down on one knee with a ring box sitting under the tree. Very sweet!

Style inspiration.

It was industrial and very relaxed. Lots of whites, creams and lush foliage to offset the brick and concrete at the venue. We also included raw wooden furniture and mismatched table settings. There was a lot of Pinterest searching initially so I was able to give our stylist a pretty good idea of what we wanted.

We did a lot ourselves. I designed the invitations, welcome sign, donut boxes, reserved seat tags, etc.

For me it was all about the little details that made it really special. The bouquet charm I carried had a photo of my grandparents on their wedding day which meant they were still with me even though they were too ill to physically be there on the day. I’d also sewn a heart shaped piece of my dads old blue shirt into the back of my dress. And I designed and had made a custom poker chip for Dan with our names, wedding date and a message saying ‘ALL IN’ written on it. He was super surprised and absolutely loved the sentiment behind it.

The dress.

I guess I was going for a boho kind of look. I knew I didn’t want a pure white dress and I’ve never been big on diamante’s, chiffon or any of your traditional kind of wedding attire. So I just chose items that I loved and they seemed to work together.

We had no official bridal party. I had my sisters and best friends with me on the morning of the wedding and we all had dressing gowns from ‘Shop Momento’ via Etsy.

The ceremony.

We were married at Mountain Goat Brewery in front of approx 80 of our closest friends & family. We each wrote our own vows which were kept secret until the day. We didn’t want a traditional arch or anything like that so we had a backdrop custom built after finding an image on Pinterest that we really liked. And our guests still talk about how much they love that we had the bar open before the ceremony!

The reception.

The reception was also at Mountain Goat. While we were outside with all of our guests having a group photo taken, the ceremony space was flipped to a reception area. All of the styling was done by Thetis at Sooti & it was just amazing. Better than anything we could have hoped for! The Grub Club served canapes while everyone mingled & we had a few photos taken.

The budget.

We had a rough idea of budget but we definitely didn’t stick to it! Our families were both amazing and extremely generous. But when we had ideas or looked into details and realised the costs involved, for Dan and I it came down to making the day exactly what we dreamed of, rather than cutting back because of budget restraints. We only plan on doing it once in this lifetime so we did it completely our way.

Words of wisdom.

Because we didn’t have a bridal party, Dan and I sat at a table set just for the two of us during meals. And it was the greatest thing ever! Your wedding day is so hectic from start to finish, and it was amazing to have just 10 or 15 uninterrupted minutes with each other to talk, relax and look out at all of our nearest and dearest who’ve come from far and wide to be there celebrating our love story. We really took it all in at that moment and you can’t put a price on that. Highly recommend doing it!
