Real Wedding – Nicole & Tom, Sunshine Coast QLD

We’ve ventured a little further North than usual to show off the stunning Hinterland celebration of Nicole and Tom.

Armed with a stellar team of suppliers, and a clear vision of a classic and elegant, black-tie event, Nicole and Tom pulled of their dream day and made memories to last a lifetime.

With lots of dark greenery and white flowers and hints of red and burgundy, it was the groom’s mother and her friend that put together such fabulous florals – not only did it display their incredible talent, but it was so special for them to be involved.

We think you’ll adore the handiwork of Janekke Storm, as she takes us on a journey of Nicole and Tom’s spectacular celebration.

In Nicole’s words…

The meeting.

Tom and I had our first kiss at the Caxton Hotel in Brisbane after a Wallabies match in 2013. We had met a few times before that through mutual friends and I had thought he was pretty cute.  Funnily enough, we were both born in Melbourne, grew up on the Sunshine Coast and went to the same primary school – it was meant to be!

The ‘one’.

I knew that Tom was ‘the one’ when I realized how incredibly happy I was around him. I could be myself and I knew that he was being himself.  We always laugh and have the best time together!

The proposal.

It was our second day in Italy and Tom had organised a day trip to Lake Como. We arrived at these beautiful gardens ‘Villa del Balbianello’ and within five minutes of being there Tom had found a quiet place and said that he had a question to ask me.  He had then organised for us to have lunch at a little restaurant overlooking the gardens where we had just got engaged.  It was amazing!

The process.

We are both fairly easy going so we didn’t find the planning process to be too stressful. We had fun with it and made most decisions together.  We had a few things that were important to us – live music, a big venue with a great dance floor, and an amazing photographer (i.e. Janneke).  Janneke had photographed one of my bridesmaid’s weddings and I knew she was amazing!  I checked for her availability before doing anything else.

We decided early on that we wanted to get married on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. We had both grown up on the Sunshine Coast and our parents still lived there.  We also had family and friends travelling from all over Australia and overseas, so we thought it would be a great location for our guests to have a weekend away.  And it’s such a beautiful place!

Style inspiration.

We both wanted a black-tie wedding that was classic and timeless. We had lots of dark greenery and white flowers, with hints of red and burgundy for a romantic autumn feel.  The styling was otherwise quite simplistic and a bit rustic to suit the venue.

Tom’s mum and two of her friends created our stunning bouquets and the reception flowers. They did such an amazing job and it was so special to have them involved.

The gown.

I loved my dress by Mariana Hardwick. I felt so comfortable in it and loved the intricate beading on the bodice.  I got my dress from Sphere Collective on the Sunshine Coast.  I went to a couple of their trunk shows from different designers and tried on some amazing dresses – Sarah was so helpful and generous with her time.  Mariana Hardwick’s collection stood out for me and this dress just felt right!

Favourite moments.

I loved every single moment of the day, especially our vows and the amazing (and hilarious) speeches, but Tom and I have always loved the dance floor. There was one song ‘Beautiful’ by Akon that we danced to together and just had the best time.

Meaning of marriage.

Marriage to me means sharing my life with the person who makes me happy, makes me laugh and supports me – and that is Tom.

Wedding soundtrack.

We chose songs that we both liked and that our band could play live:

Aisle – All of Me by John Legend.

End of Ceremony – Is this love by Bob Marley.

Reception Entry – Get down on it by Kool & The Gang.

First dance – My girl by the Temptations.

Funny stories (or near disasters).

Tom’s parents came up during the ceremony to give us our rings and Tom’s mum said ‘Welcome to the family’ to Tom instead of me – all four of us laughed!

Planning surprises.

The last two months before the wedding were pretty busy! There was a lull for some months after we booked the main vendors and suppliers, but then suddenly a lot to do in the lead up to the day. We wrote a few lists and made time to do it all, and it was fine.

Words of wisdom.

We wrote our own vows, which was initially daunting and a bit difficult, but I am so glad that we did because it made the ceremony pretty special and memorable. Otherwise, I would say to make your wedding what you want it to be and have fun along the way!

Bali certainly is blissful, so be sure to check out the beautiful celebration Kylie and Matty shared with all their fabulous family and friends at their destination wedding.
