Real Wedding – Siobhan & Glen, Mitcham VIC

For Siobhan and Glen, sharing a ‘first-look’ photography session prior to their ceremony is a moment they will never forget. Taking the time to share this time together meant they were not overwhelmed with nerves during their ceremony and made them even more excited for the celebration that lay ahead.

Choosing the magnificent Mornington Peninsula as the backdrop for their day, they created a celebration that was relaxed with a hint of boho-luxe. They invested their energy into choosing incredible suppliers that made their planning process an enjoyable and easy experience.

There to capture the beauty as it unfolded was Tess Follett.

In Siobhan’s words…

The meeting.

We met at work during our second rotation in our graduate year as registered nurses (Glen studied the double degree).

The ‘one’.

We were both instantly drawn to each other and no time together felt like enough. We both pretty much knew straight away.

The proposal.

I’d just finished my post graduate studies at University and Glen told me we were going out to celebrate. It’s a bit of a blur but we arrived in Daylesford and were walking around the Lake, Glen lead me out towards the water and got down on one knee and proposed. He knew he wouldn’t be able to choose a ring I would like so he proposed with a ring that he had designed and made himself in a couple of metal work classes. I then found out he’d organised a weekend of celebrations. Once we were home we designed my actual engagement ring which was so much fun. The ring Glen made will always be one of my most valuable possessions.

The process.

It really was so easy and without stress, we didn’t complicate it. I knew what I didn’t want so I did a lot of research but everything happened pretty quickly, we then spent just under a year not having to do much. We ended up booking the first of almost every supplier we met. We only looked at the one venue and it ticked all the boxes, it was a blank canvas and felt really relaxed, had fantastic food and wine, offered share plates rather than alternating meals and Glen got to select all the beer that was served. Our fantastic photographer Tess was the next person we booked. I’d seen another wedding she shot at the venue and the photos were stunning. When we met her we instantly felt comfortable we love our photos and are so happy we had her there, her energy was perfect and her personality is warming and happy. Tess also suggested our videographer Ryan and we will be forever grateful for that.

Style inspiration.

I was very particular but at the time I didn’t really have a theme or style in mind. In the words of one of our vendors it was described as; relaxed, crisp, boho luxe.

The dress.

I’ve never been one of those girls who had always dreamed about their wedding day so this was something I really struggled with. I tried on so many dresses and remember feeling too formal or not myself in them. When I initially tried on my dress, my mum, sisters and girlfriends loved it on me and I really liked it but I didn’t have that ‘the one’ moment that some people describe. I am such a perfectionist and I struggled with over thinking it and wondering if I could find something better. That is so ridiculous looking back now because the style of the dress suited me perfectly; it was light, subtle, relaxed and summery and I truly felt so comfortable and relaxed in it.

Favourite moments.

The whole day is so special but we both agree seeing each other at the ‘first look’ and spending time just the two of us was our favourite moment. Tess really encouraged us when we suggested a meeting prior to the ceremony and we will be forever grateful she did, she choose the location and everything about it was so special. It made us both even more excited for the rest of the day.

Traditions.

We didn’t spend the night before together other than that there were really no traditions we kept to for any reason in particular. We did what worked for us and what we felt reflected us as a couple.

Meaning of marriage.

Committing to each other forever and sticking together through everything.

Wedding soundtrack.

Aisle: 8 Circle by Bon Iver

Signing: The Blowers Daughter by Damien Rice

Isle song: Could you be Loved by Bob Marley

Reception Entry: Music Sounds better with You by Stardust

First Dance: Lets Stay Together by Al Green

Funny stories (or near disasters).

Our florist cancelled about 10 weeks before the day which was a blessing because Amelia from Bunched Together was absolutely fantastic and created everything I wanted and more. Glen went to the wrong first look location. Although it meant the ceremony started about half an hour late we will both be forever grateful to Tess and Ryan for not rushing us. It was the most special part of an overwhelmingly special day which wouldn’t have been the same if it was cut short. They were totally in the moment and made us forget it had even happened.

Planning surprises.

The overwhelming happiness you feel for the WHOLE day! Everyone tells you about it but I didn’t expect to feel the way I did, it truly is the best day. You feel so much love right from the start to the end. I was worried I was going to be stressed and nervous but I was none of those things. It was such a relaxed and happy day, almost anything could have gone against the plan and it wouldn’t have phased me.

Words of wisdom.

Do what reflects you both as a couple. Don’t over complicate things or do things to please others. Little things will go wrong but your day is really going to be so incredibly special from start to end so make the process a fun memory rather than a stressful one.

Last words.

We chose our suppliers carefully, they are fantastic at what they do but also made us both feel so comfortable. We can’t recommend them highly enough.

Relaxed and romantic, be sure to check out Jess and Cameron’s chilled out day.
