Real wedding – Sophie and Pete, Point Lonsdale VIC

Not ones for tradition, Sophie and Pete set about creating the backyard bash of a lifetime, rather than a wedding. Wearing an amazing dress hand crafted by her mother, and pairing it with the perfect leather flats by local designers &Attorney – Sophie was an absolute vision.

Married on the beautiful foreshore of Point Lonsdale, they let their emotions flow and their guests were overjoyed to watch on as this creative couple said ‘I Do’.

Bright florals and vibrant styling added to their already eye-catching affair, which Kim Cartmell has captured perfectly.

IN SOPHIE’S WORDS…

The meeting.

We met six years ago, while studying graphic design. There was a group of five of us who hung out and we always just got along and enjoyed each others company. There wasn’t a moment as such, as to when we knew each other was the one, I think we just always felt super comfortable around each other. We always kind of knew.

The proposal.

We both kind of came to a mutual realisation that we wanted to get married. We went and picked out an engagement ring together which turned out to be a really special process and one that we were not expecting. Pete then proposed three months later on the top of Ruckers Hill in Northcote.

Planning process.

We knew we wanted a low-key wedding so we tried to keep the planning as stress free and easy as possible. It was really important to us that we had lots of hearty food, great music, plenty of drinks to go around and a great photographer to capture it all! We wanted it to feel more like a backyard bash than a wedding. All in all, the planning was quite sporadic and at times a bit trying, but that made it all the more memorable.

Styling inspiration.

Honestly, it changed about a hundred times during the lead up. It started as Palm Springs inspired, but by the end it was just a big mash up of Aussie summer, mixed with some plastic lawn flamingos, and maybe a hint of Mexican fiesta.

The dress.

My amazing and talented mum actually made my dress. I had a picture of a skirt I liked from Pinterest and the top half of dress I already owned. We went and picked some beautiful French lace from Franke Stuart and mum made a pattern based on the references I gave her. There was a lot of trial and error to get the cut right but it is the most beautiful dress and I will definitely wear it again.

Favourite moment.

The ceremony was pretty special for both of us. We were both laughing and crying the whole way through it. The photos are hilarious. I think we were just in the moment, letting the emotions flow.

Traditions.

Neither of us like attention that much, so there was no cake cutting or first dance.

Meaning of marriage.

Being able to hang out with your favourite person every day – sharing and building a life together.

Wedding soundtrack.

Aisle: Time After Time by Cindy Lauper

First dance floor song: You make my dreams by Hall & Oats

Last song: Your Party by Ween

Funny stories/near disasters.

In all the excitement and backyard preparation, my mum forgot to eat and actually fainted the Friday before the wedding and spent the whole day asleep in bed! She is a trooper though and came good after some much-needed rest!

Planning surprises.

The kindness and willingness of all your family and friends to help out where they can. We were never without a pair of hands and that is really important and helpful when you are doing everything yourselves.

Words of wisdom.

Just do exactly what you want to do! Stick to something that is true to who you are as a couple.
