ASK AN EXPERT: WEDDING DAY SKINCARE PREP
Your wedding day is one day in your life when you want to feel your absolute best. It is indisputable that a newlywed couple unfailingly gives a uniquely special glow on their wedding day, but enhancing that radiance is never a bad thing. So, we asked our ultra-talented friend, makeup artist Ashleigh Fenton, to share her tips for prepping your skin in the weeks and months leading into your wedding day.
And guys, this isn’t just for the gals! Ashleigh’s wedding day skincare prep advice applies to all humans – so share with your partner for a synced bathroom basin routine.
The why.
You wouldn’t paint your walls without washing them down and priming them first, would you? We want to ensure we’re giving our makeup the best chance at staying in place and glowing all day (and night!) long. Especially through the happy tears, the kisses and the cake. If you have a makeup artist with you, they’ll already be all over what I’m about to tell you, but DIY brides and gals who love to nail their honeymoon beauty looks, this wedding day skincare prep routine is for you.
Keep it clean.
First things first, let’s talk about cleansing. A clean canvas is essential for a smooth and fresh makeup application, so start by washing away dirt, oil, sweat and makeup residue with a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type. Whether you prefer an oil-based cleanser for hydration or a clarifying formula for oily skin, don’t miss this step.
Make way for the glow.
It’s time to exfoliate. Gently, of course. Exfoliation is key for sloughing away dead skin cells and leaving a smooth, radiant complexion underneath. Whether you opt for a physical or chemical exfoliant, incorporating gentle exfoliation into your skincare routine two or three times a week can help keep dull, uneven skin away.
Plump, luminous and wedding day ready.
Hydrated skin is happy skin, and a well-moisturised complexion is essential for achieving a luminous makeup look. Choose a moisturiser that suits your skin type and apply liberally to lock in moisture and keep your skin looking plump and balmy.
Protect, protect, protect.
Of course, no morning skincare routine would be complete without sunscreen. Sunscreen is non-negotiable when it comes to protecting your skin. Opt for an SPF 30 or higher and apply it generously every morning as the final step in your skincare routine. You don’t want to spend money on skincare and treatments just for the sun to strip you of your skin glory, do you?
There you have it: the must-dos when prepping your skin for not only a flawless makeup application on your wedding day but also creating great skin habits.
