An Ivory Tribe reader asks: Is it okay to request guests wear a certain colour to tie-in with my wedding style?

This is a tricky one. We wholeheartedly believe the answer is yes—your wedding day is a canvas for your style and personalities, and aesthetics can be important (and fun!). Requesting a specific colour not only adds a chic, cohesive look to your celebration but can also make your guests feel even more of an important and treasured part of the day.

However, it’s all in the delivery.

Making your expectations clear (and reasonable) from the outset can ensure your guests know what they are working towards. Consider your guests’ comfort and wardrobe options—perhaps choose a versatile hue that is easy to find or offer a range of shades within a palette to give everyone some flexibility.

Are you happy with guests wearing all white, for example, but offering nude shoes as an option? If a winter wedding, perhaps ensure the celebrations are all inside or offer coordinated throws so guests don’t have to invest in outer layers in a colour they may never wear again.

Include the dress code in your invites or wedding website to avoid confusion. Most importantly, keep the tone light— make it about being a part of something fun, beautiful and cohesive, not just about the look.

After all, your wedding is all about celebrating your love, which will inevitably be the most blissfully beautiful part of the day.
