Real Wedding – Alex & Callum, Baxter VIC

The love story of Al and Cal started at the tender ages of 16 and 17 years old, when mutual friends decided the pair were meant to be. Oh how right they were.

With a clear vision for their day, and knowing that they wanted their celebration to be true to their individual style, the high school sweethearts pulled together a beautifully boho day with all the trimmings.

Alex and Callum said their I Do’s just the way they wanted – surrounded by their loved ones, and with one hell of a dance floor to celebrate.

Thankfully, Tribe talents Ashleigh Haase and One Heart Studios were there to document every moment.

In Alex’s words…

The meeting.

We met in highschool in 2010, ages 16 and 17. Different high schools but met through mutual friends who introduced us. I only found out recently it was actually a set up! Shout out to Simone!

The ‘one’.

Even though we were both young, I think we realised pretty early on that this wasn’t a relationship like others. We truly couldn’t imagine planning a scary adult life without the other one in it. All our dreams of ‘growing up’ and chasing our dreams always included the other and that never changed.

The proposal.

I got home from a shopping trip with my best friend (later to learn that was a ploy to get me out of the house) to a scavenger hunt. Seven clues for seven years that lead me to a final clue: a picture of our favourite picnic spot. My bestfriend drove me there and Cal, with help from a local florist, had set up a beautiful arbor and hanging flowers in the trees and he was there on one knee! He had a picnic and music all planned as well, it was amazing!

The process.

Lots of Pinterest and blog searching, finding inspo and researching what type of wedding we wanted. We put a lot of thought into our vendors and spent the most time picking the venue, photographer and videographer that we felt suited out personalities. I am a list maker so there were many, many, lists and had much satisfaction tick things off as the months went by!

Style inspiration.

Our main goal for our wedding day was to still feel like ourselves. We are very laid back people and wanted that to be represented in our day. We wanted our outfits to represent our personalities and stay true to our relaxed natures. I tried hard not to get swept up in what I thought a wedding should be, and stay focused on how I wanted our wedding to be. We pulled a lot of inspiration from boho weddings and incorporated that into our style.

The outfits.

My wedding dress was from my favourite brand, Spell & the Gypsy. I am very lucky they do wedding dresses! It made the decision very easy. I still felt very much myself in my dress, it was comfortable so I knew I would be able to dance (and eat) as much as I wanted. I loved the different laces and textures and felt that represented my normal clothing style (albeit on a grander scale!) and still felt like myself.

We also picked Cal’s outfit to suit his normal style but fancied it up of course! He is not normally a suit and tie kind of person so we felt the grey shirt and fun tie ‘casual-ed’ it down a bit but kept a formal element with the suit jacket and pants.

Favourite moments.

Hitting the dancefloor once all the official business was over! I enjoyed all of it, the ceremony, the cake cutting and first dance but to be able to let our hair down on the dancefloor surrounded by our laughing family and friends was the best feeling in the world and I will always remember how much fun we had.

Meaning of marriage.

Marriage to us is honouring the commitment we have towards one another and setting the promises and intentions we will bring forward with us through our lives together. It is recognising that things may not always be easy but that what we have is rare and worth fighting for. It is promising to each other that no matter the hardship or where life takes us that we will overcome it together.

Wedding soundtrack.

Aisle: Acoustic version of ‘You’re my best friend’ by Queen

Reception entry: ‘The heart is a muscle’ by  Gang of Youths

First dance: ‘I don’t want to set the world on fire’ by The Ink Spots

Exit: ‘Walking on sunshine’ by Katrina and the Waves

Funny stories (or near disasters).

Lets just say people should be wary of throwing sparklers after a few beers near dry shrubbery

Planning surprises.

I was surprised about much planning actually goes into a wedding, every detail needs to be decided upon, quoted, confirmed and then confirmed again closer to the date. My control freak tendencies definitely came out more than I thought they would! It definitely helped being an organised person!

Words of wisdom.

When things get overwhelming, remember the big picture. Don’t get caught up on the minute details. At the end of the day you will exit the day as husband and wife surrounded by your closest friends and family, that is what matters the most. Find good vendors that will support you and help you make your vision come to life, and stay true to yourselves!

Last words.

Thank you to my amazing vendors who truly made the day as I envisioned it and let me have fun along the way.
