Real wedding – Hayley & Hugh, Barwon Heads VIC

Hayley wanted to marry Hugh and Hugh wanted to marry Hayley – so that is just what they did!

Never ones to shy away from a party, their day focused on not only marrying one another but creating a celebration that was completely fuss free and would allow them to truly enjoy themselves. On a private property in Barwon Heads a party space was created under a tipi with magical lighting and the couple did away with as many traditions as they could.

Combining great food, great wine, great people and one hell of a party  – Hugh and Hayley surrounded themselves with joy and laughter as they declared their love in exactly the laid back fashion they had always imagined. Captured beautifully by Love Katie + Sarah, their smiles say it all!

The meeting.

Through friends. We were hanging out in the same circle for a while before hooking up at a music festival.

The one.

I don’t know exactly when I knew Hugh was the one. I had a feeling from pretty early on that we were in this for the long haul. Then all of a sudden we had pets and a house and I was pregnant.

The proposal.

We had a nice dinner out and were a little boozy having a cuddle on the couch when I blurted out ‘I want to marry you!’ He said ‘I want to marry you too’. So we did.

Planning process.

It was only 4 months of planning which was pretty crazy. But we took it really easy. Both of us wanted a laid back day and didn’t want to get hooked on details. So we decided on a backyard wedding. We booked all the big things and let the other stuff just come together naturally.

Style inspiration.

No fuss! We are party people so table settings and place cards mean nothing to us. No sit down dinner, no bridal parties, no cutting of cakes. We wanted a big party with great music and even better people and a wedding thrown in there somewhere.

The dress.

I saw the dress online before we were even engaged. I ordered it and luckily it fit. I never even went shopping.

Favourite moment.

Hugh’s vows. He has dietary restrictions and said ‘you are the lactose free custard to my gluten free tart’. Also the dancing!

Meaning of marriage.

It’s the ultimate romantic gesture.

Wedding soundtrack.

We had a mix of old and new songs with nothing too cheesy and then had a band til 10pm. Then we just handed the iPod over to the guests and danced like maniacs. We thought long and hard about the aisle song and ended up with Moon River by Audrey Hepburn – simple and beautiful.

Funny stories or near disasters.

Just as we were about to leave for the ceremony my daughter threw the most epic tantrum and refused to leave the hotel. We ended up being pretty late arriving and she was wearing a nappy and a fur coat. People were calling her Courtney Love.

Planning surprises.

That no matter how low key it is there is still so much to plan.

Words of wisdom.

Don’t stress out! Enjoy the process, no one else but you cares about the little things. On the day just go with the flow, have fun, don’t get caught in boring small talk all night. Eat the food, drink the drinks and dance to the music. You planned it so you should enjoy it!
