Real Wedding – Katherine & Mathew, St Kilda VIC

On a sun-drenched rooftop in the heart of St Kilda, Katherine and Mathew said their ‘I do’s’ in front of their loved ones in a relaxed, elegant city celebration.

Oozing effortless glamour, Kat set the tone in a stunning One Day Bridal gown, though her groom Mat, in a tailored tuxedo, was not to be outdone.

They were surrounded by little touches of glamour, thoughtfully placed by their stylist Weddings of Desire in whites and greens, that complemented the stunning terrace space. Their affection and joy was was obvious and there to capture all the love was Jerome Cole.

IN KATHERINE’S WORDS…

The meeting.

We first met during our university days at Melbourne University, but it was right in the heart of St Kilda at The George Hotel that we bumped into each other and the real courting began.

The one.

I knew just after we got together that he was the one without a doubt. We’ve always connected so perfectly.

The proposal.

Mat completely played me! We had a little family trip planned to Queensland and he’d worked it up so I was taken well and truly by surprise. After an early breakfast one gorgeous morning, he proposed while we were walking home along the beach. I was beside myself, jumping up and down on the beach squealing with glee –not how I thought I’d ever act! It was perfect though. I’m a tricky one to surprise and he caught me completely off guard. Clever boy!

Style inspiration.

We knew exactly what we wanted from the outset. We wanted to keep everything pretty simple but elegant, relaxed, effortless and fun. The main thing for us was to make sure our guests mingled, enjoyed great food and quality wine, and most of all had a ball! The Deck at Circa was the perfect location for us, it’s a contemporary space, with floor to ceiling windows and a gorgeous outdoor terrace showcasing the St Kilda skyline. We dressed it with stunning white blooms and touches of greenery. It was a fabulous spot to take in all the celebrations.

The dress.
This was probably the quickest and easiest part! I knew that I wanted something fun and unique. After searching for hours online and dreading the whole process, I finally stumbled across One Day Bridal (ODB). I tried on four dresses at ODB and knew straight away that the Daphne Dress was the one. It’s the most stunning gown. Kyha and the girls at ODB are very talented. The whole experience was seamless and so much fun. I cannot rate them highly enough.

Favourite moments.
The whole day felt like a dream. It really was perfect. I do remember the big grin on Mat’s face as I walked down the aisle. He was so proud and was beaming with his pearly whites.

Traditions.
No not really, we didn’t follow any rules or guidelines, we just did our thing, went with the flow and enjoyed the party.

The meaning of marriage.
For us, marriage is the ultimate signal that from here on in, this is our journey and our family together, no matter what challenges lie ahead.

Name your wedding soundtrack (aisle, reception entry, first dance songs):

Aisle: Sea of love by Cat Power

Any funny stories (or near disasters) in the lead up to or on the day?

No, I’m thrilled to say it was all smooth sailing!

Words of wisdom.

Don’t stress too much about getting around to every guest to say and to have long chats, enjoy your wedding and take every bit in. It’s such a fabulous day, but most importantly, it’s your day, so soak it all up and have fun.

KAT & MATS TRIBE:

Ceremony venue / location: The Deck at Circa

Reception venue / location: As above.

Celebrant/Officiant: The amazingly talented Jo Betz – she is absolutely brilliant! Jo had such a professional but relaxed and light-hearted vibe. We were loathing the idea of a clichéd ceremony but Jo was a breath of fresh air. I loved looking out and seeing our guests so engaged with her stories and her kind words about us, she was so genuine. There were lots of laughs and lots of tears which is always a good sign. Our guests were raving about what a delight she was. I wouldn’t recommend anyone else.

Photography: Captured by Melbourne photographer Jerome Cole. He did such an amazing job. We chose him for his candid and relaxed style of photography. He’s got a real eye for what works depending on the weather or the light and we were so happy to let his capable hands guide us. We decided to have photo’s of the bridal party before the ceremony and he was such a delight to be around, setting up our ‘first look’ and making sure we were having a lot of fun and laughs along the way.

Styling: Laura from Weddings of Desire styled our day to perfection. She completely got me from the get go and she’s a ball of fun to work with. She’s super talented and has such a clever and creative streak, so you know everything about your day is unique. I felt like she went above and beyond for us and took care of every little detail in the lead up, during and post wedding. I cannot thank her enough and recommend Weddings of Desire for any future bride.

Florist: Danielle Fraser, owner of Moss Industry Wedding & Events worked with Laura on the floral design. I knew I wanted a spectacular variety of crisp and modern whites and lots of luscious greenery and Laura and Danielle really bought the concept to life. The flowers were absolutely stunning, from the gorgeous bouquets to the statement centerpieces and the hanging marquee installation; the place looked magical and the beautiful perfume scent from the blooms permeated across the deck.

Hair and Make Up: Eve Gunson from Channel 10 Studios did my makeup and Marie from UVA Salon did my hair.

The Dress: Daphne Gown, One Day Bridal. ODB is the one and only place to shop for your wedding dress!

Shoes: Michael Kors.

Rings (Bride) I was incredibly lucky to have been gifted my late grandmothers engagement and eternity rings which she had designed over 60 years ago. They are truly magnificent. My grandmother was one stylish woman and they are so perfectly me. I feel so proud to wear them. Mat wanted to give me something new and from him, so we had another ring designed to match the two vintage rings and as a set they are simply stunning.

Bridesmaids dresses: I had my sister and my two best friends as my bridesmaids. I didn’t want the girls to look matchy-matchy so I asked them to choose a dress style and designer they liked. My only request was that they wore black. By chance, two ended up with slightly different styles by Shona Joy and one wore a classic dress by Scanlan and Theodore. The different styles really complimented each other in the end and the girls looked beautiful.

Grooms suit: Mat was looking stylish and handsome as always in a classic Godwin Charli tuxedo.

Grooms Shoes: Aquila

Groomsmen suits: The groomsmen all had their own black tux’s so we bought them each a crisp white shirt from MJ Bale along with a little gift box that included a new black bow tie, fresh happy socks, and a little tipple of vodka to get them ready for the day ahead. They all looked very handsome!

Catering: The Deck at Circa

Favors: We sent our friends and family home with the beautiful blooms and greenery supplied by Moss Industry. They flowers were all wrapped up and ready for guests to take home as they left for the night. It was a really sweet idea by Laura our stylist and I’m so glad we did it.

Cake / Cake topper: Our stunning cake was by Sweet as Molly and we followed the cake cutting with a champagne tower. It was such a highlight and really got the party started!

Stationery / Signage: Cake Ink created all of our stationary and signage. They were elegant but quite contemporary. We loved them.

Entertainment: Both the jazz band and the DJ which were fabulous fun and were arranged by Mr Boutique. We helped prepare the playlist as we really wanted to make sure there was a mix of old classics and dance hits. We also had a sax player join the DJ for a set, which created such a fun vibe. The dance floor really went off when he played Lubel and everyone was loving it!

Transport: Bride’s families Mercedes in silver.

Honeymoon: We’re off for a European summer in July and will soak up Italy, Croatia and Greece for 6 weeks. We can’t wait!

Guestbook: We had a wishing well and in keeping with our European honeymoon theme we bought the most exquisite guest book from Il Papiro, a boutique that crafts all of its stationary in Florence. Guests filled the beautiful book with messages and well-wishes for our honeymoon and life ahead and we’ve added some of our own precious memories and photo’s from the wedding.
