Real Wedding – Kirsten & Ben, Red Hill VIC

Kirsten and Ben were drawn to the modern and minimalist vibe of their venue, the glorious Port Phillip Estate, where they celebrated their decade-long love story in front of their favourite people.

This clever couple chose their Tribe impeccably well. From a breathtaking Georgia Young Couture gown, to Poppy Culture florals, flawless glam by Sophie Knox and stationery by State of Reverie – it’s impossible to pick a favourite element of the day.

They share with us their love story, and some helpful planning hints when it comes to selecting a dream day of suppliers. We adore this duo and their celebration, as captured perfectly by Blossom Daisy Creative.

The meeting.

This wedding was a long time coming, we have been together since May 2010.  We met one Friday night at after work drinks in Melbourne CBD and have been inseparable since.

The ‘one’.

First night we met.  Ben asked for Kirsten’s phone number, Kirsten didn’t think Ben would call, but Ben called from the bar there and then and asked Kirsten out for a date the next day, and we never looked back.

The proposal.

Down on Kirsten’s family farm in Thorpdale, in Gippsland, going for a walk through the paddocks one winter’s day.

The process.

Ben is a ‘details’ sort of person and wanted to be across the details and decision making process.  We toyed with the idea of using a planner, but wanted to stay involved in all the possibilities for the day. We decided to lock in the big items early (venue, celebrant, photographer, florist, entertainment, and then worry about the rest of the details after that).  The key items were all organised for availability around 12 months in advance, but some of the finer details were still getting organised on the day!

Style inspiration.

We just wanted to do something that felt authentic to us. We have both always been attracted to modern, minimalist styles with clean lines, which is why Port Phillip Estate was perfect for us.

The dress.

It was important that I felt myself on my wedding day. I narrowed my dress search to local designers that made modern styles with an edge. I loved Georgia Young’s dresses, and was really impressed by her talent and warmth when I went into her studio to take a look for myself. I was immediately drawn to the texture of my dress and I knew I had to try it on. I didn’t know I needed a dress made of laser cut lace from Amsterdam until I saw it!

Favourite moments.

First dance.  Ahead of time, we would have never thought this would be the case. Neither of us a big dancers and we didn’t have any lessons ahead of time, but it just felt like a moment where everything stood still and it was just us in the room.

Meaning of marriage.

We hope it doesn’t change anything about us! Life’s short, so we know it’s important to celebrate the best things in life with those we love.

Wedding soundtrack.

Aisle:  To build a home by Cinematic Orchestra

Recessional:  Here comes the sun by The Beatles

Reception entry:  Glorious by Macklemore

First dance:  One Crowded Hour by Augie March.

Funny stories (or near disasters).

It rained heavily with about 30 minutes until ‘go time’, however, as is often the case in Victoria, the weather turned, and the sun came out just in time for the ceremony. We were lucky to have a beautiful rainbow, and it made our song, ‘here comes the sun’ even more appropriate.

Planning surprises.

The sheer number of decisions you have to make! I was also surprised about how far in advance good suppliers book out.

Words of wisdom.

It will take more time than you think.  Do your research, but once you find something you like, you’ll know it’s the right option, and just lock it in and move on.  Trust your decisions.

Do what feels right to you, and what feels authentic to you. Comparison is the thief of joy.  Stay true to yourself.

For a dream day, you need a dream team. Follow Kirsten and Ben’s lead and choose your Tribe wisely – here is our directory of talent.
