Real Wedding – Matt & Danielle, Melbourne VIC

Danielle and Matt’s slickly chic celebration was nothing short of cult movie cool, full of smouldering intensity, epic urban streetscapes and sizzling connection.

We love that this gorgeous pair chose to take their inspiration from the things they love in their lives, rather than devouring only wedding focused content (not that we don’t love a good bit of wedspo – obviously!). Their favourite foods, music, colours and fashion were interwoven to create a simply spectacular celebration of their personality and style.

A bold colour palette of Monaro reds, magenta pinks, soft dusky rose, and pops of clean vanilla orchid carried the dramatic vibrancy of the day into the reception.

Danielle took time to describe her vision to designer Jason Grech, coming up with a unique creation of modern magic, edgy yet elegant, paired perfectly with Matt’s uber-cool Thom Brown suit. Exchanging her flowing skirts for a beaded mini was an inspired choice as the dance floor heated up, and photography master Eric Ronald captured every epic emotion.

The meeting.

We met at school initially but didn’t hang out much there. It wasn’t until years later that we reconnected as friends, and it took off from there.

The ‘one’.

I think there was an odd certainty from the beginning. It felt different; it just felt right – like it was too easy, and our paths seemed to align perfectly.

The proposal.

Matt popped the question in a very elaborate way! He worked with a travel agent to create a realistic terms and conditions that we had won a flight to the Maldives (based on an Instagram post he had previously commented on). It was over my birthday, and we were staying in this incredible over-water villa. He said he wanted to go jet skiing for my birthday to this great snorkelling area. He took me on the jet-ski to a secluded sandbank where we had a marquee set up with champagne and in the sand, the words “will you marry me”.

Planning process.

Matt and I really worked as a team to plan our day. We had a lot of fun. We didn’t take any of it too seriously and really took the time to enjoy the journey. We made a list of all the things we needed to book and ticked them off one by one.

Style inspiration.

I think we drew inspiration from non-wedding related things we liked. We really wanted both of our personalities to be seen throughout the whole day, so each element was inspired by us! Our favourite food, our favourite snacks, our favourite colours, favourite music, fashion etc.

The outfit.

My outfit was one of the things that took the longest to settle on. I went to see so many stores and designers and struggled to find the one that was just right. Finally, I met Jason Grech, and we instantly just clicked. I knew he got me, and though he hadn’t created a dress like what I had in mind before, I trusted him and knew he could do anything. He ended up making it even better than I imagined. We worked really collaboratively on designing the dress. We would both sketch things and piece things together; then he’d go and make it come to life – it was magical. Such a special process, and he is an incredible human.

Favourite moments.

That’s a hard one to pinpoint. In between our photos and heading over to the reception, Matt decided to drive the car we moved around in, so it was just him and me for about 20 minutes, and it was nice to soak it all in and just have alone time.

Meaning of marriage.

Marriage to me means a team, partnership and forever.

Wedding soundtrack.

Aisle: Ave Maria by Franz Schubert

Reception entry: Day 4: Everybody Get Down by Tom Misch

First dance: Let’s Stay Together by Al Green

Words of wisdom.

Use a wedding budget template to help you make sure you check everything off and factor it into your budget. It’s so easy for all the little things to add up. Get to know the suppliers you are working with – they are such a big part of the day.
