Real Wedding – Nikola & Timothy, Gapsted VIC

For a gorgeous, sun-drenched country celebration, look no further than Nik and Tim’s loved-up wedstival. This is a day as fun-filled as it is aesthetically appealing, and for an authentic, genuine reflection of a couple – it is perfection.

High school sweethearts Nik and Tim set out to create a day that truly reflected their personalities; a relaxed country-style soiree with the feel of a big family party, sans formalities but plus epic good times. Theming inspiration came from the summer season and the bushland tones surrounding them; light, airy linens, warm terracotta, burnished apricot and soft olive greens.

After a ceremony by superstar Alana with Love, filled with meaningful personal touches and loads of laughs, the newlyweds took a moment together for a golden hour portrait session unlike any we’ve seen. Taking vintage bicycles for a spin, shooting some hoops and cracking champagne on the trampoline, this is one ultra-cool couple who are truly living the party vibe.

Every epic moment is captured to blissed-up perfection by photography legend Jackson Grant. Don’t miss a detail; scroll on!

The meeting.

High school sweethearts, we first met when we were ten years old at the local pool, but it was until we were reintroduced through mutual friends at the age of 15, and we have been together ever since, 13 years and counting.

The one.

We both knew when we decided to move in together. After a couple of years of long distance between Melbourne and Wodonga, we made the decision to live the city life together and then discovered that an entire life together would be pretty epic too!

The proposal.

On the side of a 4WD track in the Victorian High Country, overlooking the mountains with just the two of us.

Planning process.

We really wanted to enjoy the planning process. Tim did most of the planning (he is the organised one). It was a pretty seamless process with massive thanks to our wedding planner Sarsha Tanner. She truly was the backbone to how beautifully everything flowed, and she made the day and preparation so much easier and stress-free and put so much thought into those little and very special moments.

Style inspiration.

We wanted a wedding that reflected our personalities. We wanted it to mirror a big family party with a relaxed country style and for everyone to kick back and enjoy themselves without too many formalities of a traditional wedding.
Ultimately, we drew the majority of our inspiration through our everyday lives and wanted our personalities to be reflected throughout our day.

The ceremony.

Our ceremony, in our eyes, was perfect as it captured every part of who we are. Alana, our celebrant, told our story beautifully, and we were surrounded by all our loved ones, friends, and family. We wanted a location that was meaningful to us, and the venue Cortes Kiln was only a couple of kilometres from Tim’s family home and only ten minutes from the town Nik grew up in. Nikola’s Nonna and Nonno were tobacco farmers, so the repurposed tobacco kiln/ accommodation on the property was a very special element of our day.

The outfits.

We wanted a colour palette that suited the location and style we were going for. Having a summer wedding we wanted light airy linens as well as native flowers and colours that suited our neutral colour palette. We drew inspiration from terracotta, olive green and mustard tones.

Favourite moment.

Our favourite part of the day was when we got to spend some time alone together at sunset with just the two of us. We enjoyed a jump on the trampoline, shot some hoops, cracked a bottle of champagne and danced in the sunset.

Meaning of marriage.

Marriage to us is the inseparable bond that two people share, and sticking by each other no matter what life throws at you. It is going ‘all in’ for the long haul, cherishing the little things, and never going to bed on an argument.

Wedding soundtrack.

Aisle: Send Me On My Way by Colin & Caroline
Reception entry: You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall and Oats
First dance: Anyone by Justin Bieber (performed live by Bennett from Hey Jack)

Funny stories (or near disasters).

Nik ended up getting heatstroke between our ceremony and reception, and about ten minutes before our first dance, she was head down on the porcelain bus and we can categorically tell you, we have never seen someone rally so hard with the biggest and most genuine smile on her face. It was like nothing had ever happened. We had a relatively stress-free time, aside from a small vomiting intermission.

Planning surprises.

I think the biggest part of the whole wedding and planning was just how much organisation is needed on the day. We had an absolute saviour in Sarsha. Without her, our day would not have been nearly as amazing as it was.

Words of wisdom.

Make sure you have fun planning the wedding day, it all comes and goes so quickly, so make sure you savour every moment. Have someone on the day who looks after all the little things; this will mean you can focus on each other and focus on having the best day possible, without worrying about who’s keeping the beers cold! And lastly, make sure your day reflects who you both are, don’t be afraid to go against the norm. You may upset a few uncles, aunties and grandparents, but when the day arrives, everyone will wear a smile from ear to ear.

Final words.

Make sure you have plenty of cold beer, water, Panadol and Maxalon on standby. And make sure you drink plenty of water before the 3pm ceremony on a 30-degree Northeast Victorian summer’s day – we speak from experience!
