Visualise Your Day

Before you dive too deeply into planning, it’s essential to pause and align as a couple. Wedding designer and coordinator Jacinta from Champagne Electric encourages couples to start with visualising rather than logistics, suggesting you set aside your very first wedding planning date night simply to talk about how you want the day to feel.

“Keep it light,” she says. “What are you most looking forward to? What kinds of words describe the picture of the day that’s forming in your head? What do you and your partner love doing in your day to day, what fun memories do you have?”

Jacinta also suggests capturing these thoughts in a wedding journal, or even as notes on your fridge or desktop, so you can return to them again and again as your plans take shape.

Prioritise the Energy of Your Day

Celebrant Emily from Le Lien reminds couples that the energy of your wedding is just as important as the aesthetics: “Beauty is such an incredible healing modality, and the aesthetics of your day play an important part in creating an unforgettable celebration. However, all the flowers, napery, and stationery in the world cannot compete with the influence the energy of an event can have on the overall experience.”

Focus on how you want your day to feel and let that guide your decisions – from décor and lighting to music and timing – so your celebration truly reflects you as a couple.

Decide what planning tools you will use.

Are you the wedding planning book type? Wedding planning books are a great way to keep your wedding plans to hand at all times. They also become a wonderful keepsake of your wedding planning journey. Luckily, we can help in that department with our wedding planning book Wedding Plans.

If spreadsheets are more your style, you might prefer a digital approach you can update and tweak as you go. Or maybe a mix of both works best for you. Whatever you choose, the key is to pick tools that are practical, functional, and make the planning process enjoyable rather than overwhelming.

Get Your Budget in Check

Jacinta from Champagne Electric knows how easy it is for wedding costs to spiral — which is why she recommends: “Set up a separate bank account for your agreed wedding budget and keep a spreadsheet of every purchase and prepared purchase. Keep in mind deposits, due dates and final payments.”

She adds a simple but powerful rule: “Map out what’s expected from the start, so the temptation isn’t to keep adding things unnecessarily!”

With this approach, you can see exactly where your money is going, focus on what truly matters, and keep financial stress to a minimum as your plans unfold.

Choose Vendors Who Truly Get You.

Celebrant Emily from Le Lien emphasises the importance of personal connection when selecting your wedding team: “In the modern world of wedding planning, overconsumption can quickly lead to overwhelm and creative burnout. Having vendors who you can trust and who align with your values will enable you to set trends aside and mainline your own individual authenticity.”

She adds: “They act as a sounding board, consistently bringing you back to ensure that not only are you intentional and considered in your planning, but that you don’t force elements and timings, allowing you to make decisions from a complete state of trust. Remember, your love and story are the headline act, everything else should complement this.”

Choosing vendors who truly understand you will make planning smoother and ensure your wedding feels authentic to your story.

Timing is Everything

A great way to kick off planning is by discussing a potential timeframe for your celebration. You don’t need an exact date yet, but it’s helpful to consider how far out you’d like your wedding to be. Are you the kind of couple who doesn’t want to wait more than 12–18 months post-engagement? Are you dreaming of a summer celebration or some winter magic?

Think about key events in your calendar, seasonal availability of flowers or food, accommodation needs, and the accessibility of your preferred suppliers. Considering these factors early will help ensure your chosen timeframe works for you — and prevent disappointment down the track.

Book Your On-the-Day Coordinator Early

Jacinta from Champagne Electric stresses the importance of including an on-the-day coordinator from the very start: “Often this person is looked into at the end of your wedding planning journey, making it feel like an add-on, or you might think ‘we actually don’t need this person because…’.”

She explains why it’s worth prioritising: “Trust me, it is the greatest gift you can give yourself in the busy lead up to and on the day of your wedding, keeping you present and the day you’ve so meticulously planned enjoyable. After all, you want to remember this day for years to come!”

Including a coordinator early ensures seamless communication with your vendors and allows you to soak up every moment – without additional stress!

Be Present With Your Partner

Emily from Le Lien also encourages couples to carve out micro moments to fully absorb their wedding day: “Carve out micro pauses within the day to ensure you are able to fully embody the feeling of presence throughout your wedding day. This includes some much-needed alone time with your partner, a moment for just the two of you to soak in the atmosphere and remember it for years to come. Your guests will feed off your energy, so if you are present and connected, they will be too. Presence over perfection always.”

Whether it’s a quiet pause together during the ceremony, a private toast, or a short walk between photos, these micro moments help you be truly present and make lasting memories.

Communication is Key

Clear, open communication is key to stress-free planning. Set aside time to discuss ideas, budgets, and decisions regularly so both partners feel heard and aligned. Checking in with each other prevents small disagreements from becoming bigger issues and ensures that planning stays collaborative, fun, and intentional.

Prioritise Self-Care

Wedding planning can be joyful, but it can also be overwhelming. Make time for yourself and as a couple to recharge — whether it’s date nights, a workout, a relaxing walk, or just quiet moments together. Staying calm and present not only makes the planning journey more enjoyable, it also ensures you fully soak up every moment of your wedding day.
