Hidden wedding costs: what couples wish they’d known.

When we asked you about the wedding costs that caught you off guard during planning and beyond the day, the responses revealed some important patterns.

Here are your questions and the realities behind these unexpected expenses.

“Invitations 😔”

Stationery costs escalate quickly, especially when you factor in save-the-dates, invitations, RSVP cards, menus, signage, and thank-you cards. Quality printing, specialty papers, and design work add up faster than most couples anticipate – and rightly so, as there is a human behind those designs, with years of practice and experience to hone their skills.

Consider prioritising which pieces matter most to you, or explore digital alternatives for some elements while splurging on others.

“Everything adds up quickly! Custom dresses are the way to go – so much cheaper.”

Wedding dress budgets can expand beyond the initial purchase price when alterations are needed. Traditional bridal boutiques offer curated collections and expert styling advice, but extensive alterations can add significant costs depending on the complexity of changes required.

For couples seeking alternatives, custom dressmakers create made-to-measure gowns that eliminate most alteration needs.

Both approaches have their benefits – boutiques provide the full shopping experience and established designer relationships, while custom makers offer personalised fit from the start. The key is understanding the total cost structure of each option and choosing what aligns with your budget and priorities.

“Vendor costs based on time starting from their location and travel! Not from service time”

This pricing structure catches many couples off guard. Vendors often calculate costs from when they leave their base until they return home, not just the hours actively working at your wedding.

This is standard practice for good reason – it accounts for the full day commitment and travel time. Always clarify how travel and timing affect pricing during initial consultations.

“Getting your dress dry-cleaned after the event! $500++”

This is something that so many couples don’t realise, and is worth noting in your budget from the beginning. Professional wedding dress cleaning and preservation is a specialised service that goes far beyond regular dry cleaning. The process involves stain removal, careful cleaning of delicate fabrics, and proper storage to prevent yellowing. While costly, it’s essential if you want to preserve your dress for sentimental value, resell or future use.

“Travel costs for areas outside of metro… up to $250 in travel costs per service”

Regional weddings often involve travel fees that reflect both distance and time commitment. Vendors typically charge based on their full day away from their base location, which is standard practice across the industry. When planning rural or regional celebrations, factor these costs into your vendor budget from the beginning, or search for vendors local to your venue.

Venues will often share preferred supplier lists with their couples, including vendors who live close by.

“FLOWERS”

Florals involve more complexity than couples often realise. Beyond the arrangements themselves, consider delivery fees, setup time, breakdown services, and potential transportation costs between ceremony and reception locations. Seasonal availability affects pricing, and last-minute changes can impact budgets significantly.

Option to manage these costs, including considering transferable elements (eg moving the ceremony florals inside to dress the reception), having in-depth conversations with your florist from the beginning, or even considering artificial flowers as a cost-effective solution.

“A marquee for a DIY wedding 😩

DIY weddings often require infrastructure that couples don’t initially consider. Marquees, lighting, power, flooring, and weather protection can quickly exceed the cost of traditional venue hire. Before committing to DIY, get comprehensive quotes for all necessary elements to make an informed comparison. This is where a planner or hire company can be truly invaluable – they will ensure no elements are left forgotten, from the beginning.

“Pay to have flowers moved from one spot to another and not allowed to do it ourselves”

Many venues have policies about who can handle arrangements and decor, often for insurance and safety reasons. Professional installation and breakdown services ensure arrangements arrive safely and venues meet their obligations. This is typically outlined in venue contracts, so review these details during planning.

“All the random little extra costs in the venue, ie. $4 pp for water at ceremony location if it exceeds X°”

Venues often have per-person charges for additional services based on specific circumstances. These might include ceremony amenities, extended setup times, or weather-related provisions. Always request a comprehensive breakdown of potential additional costs when reviewing venue contracts.

“No one talks about the additional costs of tailoring the wedding dress.”

Bridal alterations can range from simple hemming to complex restructuring, with costs varying dramatically. Rush alterations, significant size changes, or structural modifications increase expenses. Book alterations early and discuss potential costs upfront to avoid last-minute surprises.

“I would suggest having some spare money for the week of the wedding. Little surprises!”

This might be the most valuable advice from our community. Wedding week inevitably brings small unexpected costs – last-minute alterations, additional gratuities, extra flowers, or logistics solutions. Having a dedicated buffer fund removes stress from these final details.

The pattern across all these responses? Communication and planning are essential. Ask detailed questions, read contracts thoroughly, and build buffer room into your budget.

Remember, your vendors are on your side and want you to have the best day possible, so ask them if you’re unsure – trust us, no question is a silly one in the world of weddings. We know that you don’t do this every day! Your team want you to be informed so you can relax and enjoy your dream day.
