Getting to know Briggins

It can be a woman’s world when it comes to weddings, but don’t forget your dapper dude, who deserves to look his best also.

Talented tailors, Briggins, passionately believe in well-tailored suits, combined with fabulous service. Briggins offer the best of both worlds when it comes to a shopping experience. Either visit one of their studios for their in-house service, or have their travelling tailor come to privacy of your home – either way the beer and champagne will be flowing.

We couldn’t resist learning more about the ‘Briggins’ experience and be sure to scroll to the bottom for an exclusive Ivory Tribe readers suit special which we are sure you will want to take advantage of.

Tell us about Briggins – where and why did the business begin?

Back in 2006 Matthew Higgins needed a suit. Time poor with exacting standards, Matt’s search was fruitless, but he did have a ‘lightbulb’ moment. Soon after, he co-founded Briggins with Daniel Breese on a shared vision of convenience, quality and delivering a customer- focused experience.

What is unique about your offering?

We have three studios located throughout Melbourne and Sydney, plus a Travelling Tailor service throughout Perth and Melbourne. Briggins is not traditional retail. When you turn up to one of our studios (which is by appointment only) we have a dedicated team to look after all your needs. Not only that, we let the gents enjoy a beer, listen to tunes and they can even play ping-pong while we talk colours, fabric, style etc.

We also offer ready-to-wear (with adjustments) and made-to-measure.

What’s the ‘traveling tailor’ process?

It’s exactly the same as coming into one of our studios – except we come to you with the whole kit and caboodle.

What are some things men should consider when searching for their wedding suit?

One of our core philosophies when it comes to gents and weddings is that it’s his day too. The suit is just as important as the dress (just don’t tell her that!) We encourage grooms to wear something they feel great in and not something that may be high fashion now, but will be a tad embarrassing in the family pictures that adorn the mantel piece in ten years-time. Go classic, get a well-fitted suit but still comfortable enough to rock out the running man and robot on the dancefloor.

How important is a well-fitting suit?

Very important. We see so many pictures of grooms with ill-fitting suits – think trousers that are too long or ankles that are not tapered and end up making the groom look like they are wearing bell-bottoms.

You have to feel comfortable and you need something that fits your body, as a suit is not a one size fits all kind of deal.

Can you tell us about any recent trends you have seen when it comes to menswear?

The ‘tux’ is back with a vengeance, especially the white tuxedo, which we saw a lot of recently at Cannes. Give me a white tux with a peak lapel, tailored midnight blue trousers, textured navy bow tie and we’re there.  This is a brilliant wedding look that will never get old.

What accessories should a groom consider pairing with their suit?

Pocket squares and a good tie or bow tie. Remember these guys are brothers but not identical – they should complement each other but never be the same.

Should a groom’s suit match his groomsmen?

This is really up to the individual. We would recommend that if the groom wanted to wear something slightly different, a good idea would be to wear a tailored waist coat to stand out a little more.
