Creative keepsakes with Natalie Sitka

Surf Coast artist Natalie Sitka has created a blossoming new business for couples looking for a unique and special way to preserve their wedding day.

While traditionally a bride might opt to dry her wedding bouquet – or have the flowers pressed, Natalie’s hand-drawn replications of a bride’s blooms are a fresh approach to keeping the wedding dream alive.

Her fun and whimsical creative creations are becoming incredibly popular, so we were thrilled to sit down with Natalie to hear more about her venture and explore the unique and personalised art.

Q&A

Your bouquet illustrations are so lovely and unique – tell us about how your creative venture came about.

I began drawing bouquets when a florist asked me to do one of her favourite bouquets that she had done for a wedding, and I thought what a lovely idea, and a unique way to preserve your wedding bouquet! It grew from there.

Describe your work and what inspires it.

I have always been quite sentimental and am drawn to personalised gifts and mementos.

Where did you get your experience/artistic training?

High school, my mum and myself! Art was my best subject at school but I never thought it could be a career, so I decided to get a ‘real job’. I love to tinker and spend a lot of time researching or just playing around with different styles and techniques until something works.

What techniques and products do you use to create your pieces?

Fineliners, watercolour and thick cotton watercolour paper. The materials are so important and I am very particular about what I use. Actually, my favourite palette is a very old one from highschool that I still use. I don’t use a particular technique per-se, just a dose of fearlessness knowing that if it doesn’t work out I can start again.

How much influence does your work as a psychologist have on your art?

Firstly, the work can be heavy, so I need the outlet. I am also fascinated by emotions and the human experience and this is often reflected in my work, especially in my abstract or personal work.

What is special about a personalised piece of artwork?

Because it is unique to the individual or couple and something that no one else in the world has.   It acts as a memento of a special event, time or person and can help to evoke beautiful memories. It can be cherished forever and passed down through generations.

Describe the creative process for us and what steps a bride takes to have her own special piece created.

A bride or groom will contact me with an idea and then send photos of themselves or the bouquet and any other information that they want included (pets, footy club etc). They can be as involved as they like or I can take the reigns!

We have no doubt you would be receiving lovely feedback from your couples – how have you found your work to be received so far?
I’ve had a really positive response. I love seeing the reactions of people who receive my work as a gift, it brings me so much joy! I know they must love it when they then order work for their friends and family.
