Music Makers – a chat with Lark Music

After you’ve survived your loved-up ceremony and gushed over the gorgeous speeches by loved ones, the dance-floor is where it’s at. Finally, you can let your hair down and celebrate like you never have before.

When it comes to this moment, the last thing you want is an empty dance-floor. Now is the time to fire the party up – and the only way to do this is to choose your music wisely. The last impression your guests will have of the night is the revelry taking place on the dance-floor so it’s all about creating the right kind of vibe.

We sat down with Luke, the director of Lark Music – one of the most well-known and incredibly talented musicians on the wedding circuit – to chat all things music.

Why are you so passionate about great music?

Music is the most universal communication tool that we as humans have!

People of any language, background, age or social status can communicate with great melodies and rhythms – with no need for words… just swiveling hips and flailing arms!

Can music make or break a wedding?

Absolutely! There is no doubt that all the best weddings that I have performed at or attended have been for people that highly valued the importance of music as a way of encouraging true celebration. The kind of celebration that only happens when a dance floor really hit that crescendo of absolute celebration – when you look out and see a group singing or dancing with new friends or old relatives. A wedding is not just meant to be an event that people attend, it’s meant to be an absolute celebration of two people’s love. Celebrations need more than fancy dinners and photographs. They demand great music!

What does Lark offer in the way of music for a wedding?

Lark Music is small collective of buddies who love playing music that inspires celebration. We provide all the music for your big day – from live acoustic music, to a rocking three to ten piece live band or even a DJ if that’s your jam. From the jazz of Louis and Ella, to the classic sounds of The Beatles, Queen and Stevie Wonder, and the modern thump of Bruno Mars, The Killers and Daft Punk. We cover it all and are as comfortable in reading the crowd as we are learning your bridal dance.

What are your top tips for choosing the perfect wedding band?

Repertoire is such a huge part of the deal. A band has to know the ‘right’ songs to get everyone up on the dance floor. Quality in music is really in the ears of the beholder, but it’s definitely worth listening out for the top musicians and remembering that you really do get what you pay for. Your wedding band should be open to learning your special requests. While we might be at the pricier end for a band, we deliver great service, value  and a band that will truly set your event apart.

What is Lark’s music mantra?

It sounds corny, but I and everyone in Lark are absolutely pumped about creating moments.

That moment of elation that is felt when every guest at your wedding is singing along to your farewell song. That moment when the bride struts down the aisle towards her waiting lover, their favourite love song strummed above the gasps of the gathered crowd. Or two people in love dancing awkwardly to a song that is theirs alone for that moment. That’s what it is about, otherwise we’d just be playing in pubs.

Another thing that is our personal mantra is ensuring no breaks between songs and keeping the tempo high for the length of our sets. This raises the party vibe considerably and keeps it rocking all night long.

Anything else a bride and groom should consider when it comes to their wedding music?

You want your band to entertain everybody and of course you want to book live music that matches your personality. But you also want a band that creates a party atmosphere that everyone can get on board with.  Another thing…it should not be a case of booking a DJ or live band – in this day and age we all work together and having both can ensure that the music is smoothly curated throughout the evening.

Quick five.

Top three songs for getting the party started.

We play all the newest tunes, but I can’t go past some classics for getting everybody on the d-floor. Saw Her Standing There by The Beatles, Oh What A Night by Franki Valli and Mr Brightside by The Killers.

Top three first dance songs for the bride and groom.

The Wedding Song by Angus and Julia Stone

Case Of You by Joni Mitchell (performed this song at a wedding recently and it was a truly beautiful moment).

At Last by Etta James

Three must-have reception songs.

It really depends on the crowd, but we usually can’t go past Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen, Ho Hey by The Lumineers and dare I say it… Horses by Daryl ‘Bloody’ Braithwaite. Love it or hate it, you will be loving it at 10.45pm when everyone has their tie wrapped around their head.

Three songs that should never be played at a wedding reception.

To Her Door by Paul Kelly, She F**king Hates Me by Puddle of Mud, Closer by Nine Inch Nails and here’s a fourth, Mustang Sally.
