Real Elopement – Nick & Andrea, Comporta Portugal

When Nick slipped an engagement ring onto Andrea’s finger as she slept during their Swiss getaway, it set the tone for what was to come – a celebration that prioritized intimate moments over elaborate gestures.

After ten years together, this couple understood what mattered most. Their vision of an elopement evolved beautifully to include their closest family, finding its perfect expression in a private villa in Comporta, Portugal. Here, minimalist design harmonizes with natural beauty, as beach dunes and coastal landscapes inspire their carefully considered, ultra-chic aesthetic.

Among many thoughtful touches, Andrea’s decision to change into her late mother’s wedding dress for their reception created an especially poignant moment, recreating treasured photographs from years past. It’s these kinds of personal details that transform their intimate celebration into something extraordinary.

With the expertise of planner Sofia Gama bringing their vision to life, this destination celebration proved that sometimes the most meaningful moments come from keeping things stunningly simple.

The meeting.

We met on a blind date in college.

The one.

We both knew pretty soon that we had found our person.

The proposal.

Andrea’s one and only request was that the proposal be intimate and not in public or in front of a large group of people. Nick slipped the ring onto Andrea’s finger while she was sleeping during a trip to Switzerland.

The decision to elope.

We initially imagined eloping just the two of us, so when we decided to include our families in the celebration, we knew we wanted to keep it small and intimate.

Planning process.

The planning process was extremely smooth, thanks to our incredible wedding planner, Sofia Gama. Sofia shared our vision and has the most exquisite taste, so we were lucky enough to entrust her with a lot of decisions. Being in the US and planning the wedding was extremely smooth with her guidance.

Style inspiration.

Once we decided we were going to have a small ceremony, we decided we wanted to find a villa where everyone could stay together for a long weekend. The style of the villa we rented ended up informing a lot of our inspiration for the style of the wedding. The villa captured our minimalistic style, and we let the landscape of the beach and the surrounding dunes help us create a colour palette and a floral design that felt uniquely us.

The outfits.

Andrea: I found my dress at the first wedding store I visited, I knew I wanted something simple and elegant. My dress had pockets, and that truthfully sold me! For my second look, I wore my mom’s wedding dress. She was my best friend, and she passed away a few years ago, so it was very special to be able to wear her dress and recreate some of the photos from her wedding day.

Nick: All white tux with black bowtie.

Favourite moments.

It is so hard to narrow down to one moment but Nick’s favourite part of the day was the dinner with our friends and family. The food was absolutely incredible and was Nicks’s favourite part of our wedding. My favourite moment (Andrea) was changing into my mother’s wedding dress and recreating some photos of her wedding day.

Meaning of marriage.

We got married after being together for ten years. Oftentimes when people ask Nick what is the secret to so many years together, he responds, “You have to find someone who you truly want to spend every moment with.” Marriage, for us, is a commitment to love, growth, and unwavering support through all the seasons of life.

Celebration soundtrack.

Aisle: Dandelions by Ruth B.

First dance: Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra

Funny stories (or near disasters).

The morning of the wedding, our bathroom flooded, which caused chaos for the plans we had for where we were each getting ready. Ultimately, Nick ended up fishing things out of the flooded bathroom for Andrea to get ready all morning. It’s something we still laugh about today.

Planning surprises.

If applicable to your situation – how did you break your elopement news, and what were the reactions?

Words of wisdom.

If you are leaning towards a micro-wedding or elopement – do it! You will not regret it.
