Real Wedding – Corinna & Daniel, Waiheke Island NZ
From a proposal that didn’t go quite to plan, to a destination wedding executed to perfection, Corinna and Daniel’s journey down the aisle had it all.
Daniel planned to ask the love of his life to be his wife at the Taj Mahal while in India, but a miscommunication with the driver saw them taken to a jewellery store instead.
After a panicked pivot – and some growing suspicion on Corinna’s part – they ended up at the equally impressive Agra Forte where they laughed their way to ‘yes’, relishing in the unique beauty and humour of their engagement story as it happened.
When deciding on a wedding destination, Corinna and Daniel opted for somewhere they had a heart connection – a place the bride once called home.
And so 80 of their family and friends travelled from around the globe to descend on Waiheke Island, New Zealand.

The meeting.
We connected on Hinge but it took months to meet. And when we met I was on crutches with a fractured hip which made for a funny but potentially awkward first date.
The one.
We knew we’d found ‘the one’ because we just have the best time together.
The proposal.
We got engaged in India. Dan had planned to propose at the Taj Mahal but due to a language barrier and some confusion he was taken to a jewellery store – thinking he wanted to buy a ring instead. After a lot of panicked discussions between Dan and the guide, we ended up at Agra Forte and laughed our way through the proposal that didn’t go to plan.
Planning process.
We knew that we wanted to get married in New Zealand, where I am from. To start we picked Jonny as our photographer and then the venue on Waiheke Island. I had always loved the restaurant at Mudbrick so it made for an easy decision. Quickly after that Revel & Light to do some decor and things kept building from there. Having really good support from the best vendors made the planning process a lot easier for us, so we were very lucky.
Style inspiration.
I really enjoyed researching different styles and working out what made sense for our venue and our values. Having two best friends who had recently got married in the New South Wales South Coast and in Italy helped with inspiration too. I ultimately wanted it to feel like a really nice dinner with friends.
The ceremony.
We laughed a lot in our ceremony. It was honest and not too formal which we felt represented us. Wed by Renee was perfect as reflecting us both individually and as a couple.
The look.
I chose a wedding dress with a lot of detail and a big train that was hand-made by Liz Martinez. I knew I wanted it from the moment I put it on, but I really deliberated on how big it was. I opted for a Michael Lo Sordo Silk dress for the evening. Dan went traditional with a P Johnson suit.
Favourite moments.
Having all of our friends and family who had travelled from the UK, USA, Singapore and Australia celebrating with us.
Words of wisdom.
Just try to block out the noise and expectation and plan a day that you will both enjoy.
