Real Wedding- Jessica & Mitchell, Newstead VIC

Jess and Mitchell went in search of a stunning, natural setting that would combine with glamorous greenery and beautiful architecture, in order to help bring their wedding dreams to life.

They found this and more in Buttlerland, that played host to their romantic and relaxed celebration, feeling completely at home as they stood beneath the properties 300-year-old gum tree and said their I-do’s.

These high school sweethearts really did celebrate in style and a moving musical moment captured Jess’ heart entirely when her husband took to the stage to serenade her alongside their band.

Documented by Phoebe Powell, this down-to-earth and dreamy day is sure to leave you feeling loved-up.

The meeting.

We met in 2004 at school, a long time ago. We were friends first then fell in love.

The ‘one’.

Mitchell’s always been my best friend. When I was going through a tough time in my life, he stood by me, supported me and was the bright light in my days and I realised he was the one I wanted to share my life with.

The proposal.

We love exploring the great outdoors together, and one weekend we went away to stay at a beautiful property in the Otways on a farm on the edge of the forest. We had a recently got our new puppy Harry at the time and we were taking him for a walk through the paddocks and at the top of the hill overlooking the ocean Mitchell stopped and got down on one knee with a beautiful dark sapphire stone that he had chosen, we were both in tears.

The process.

The planning process was busy but organised, I had everything down in my spreadsheet and Mitchell was super helpful organising the logistics, then in the few days before the wedding it got a little crazy.

Style inspiration.

We wanted a relaxed and natural setting with lots of flowers and greenery and beautiful architecture – Butterland was the perfect place and vibe for what we wanted to create. The old butter factory is a welcoming and unique building, we felt at home there and it has a stunning 300-year-old gum tree out the back that we got married underneath. Katie Marx who owns the venue and works magic with flowers helped us pull it all together.

The look.

I wore an ivory silk skirt and matching blouse that ties at the back from Lola Varma. I love the understated elegance, simplicity of the design and the way the material moves. I had a lot of trouble deciding on the outfit because I wanted it to be perfect, so I tried on countless dresses with the help of my wonderfully patient mum and bridemaids. I was worried about it right up until the day but once I put everything on, it all came together as I had imagined and I was incredibly happy with it.

Mitchell’s suit, shirt and tie were are from Oscar Hunt and they were perfectly suited to the wedding and fit like a glove, Wei did a fantastic job putting it together and was very helpful throughout the process.

Favourite moments.

When Mitchell played our song ‘Better Together’ on the guitar with our band (The Baker Boys), after dinner. He is an excellent guitarist and music means a lot to us. He first played it to me as a surprise on my 21st birthday.

Meaning of marriage.

A commitment to love, trust, support and grow with my best friend.

Funny stories (or near disasters).

On our drive up to Newstead with a trailer on the back of our struggling car, we were almost out of petrol so pulled into a petrol station to fill up during a storm and found that the power was off and they couldn’t sell any petrol until later that night. We had to sit by the road for awhile with stress levels running high until my dad saved the day by driving down with a jerry can full of petrol to get us there. Also, on the day, our dog was supposed to walk in with my brother and the rings midway through the ceremony, but he ran out, down the aisle to where the guests were seated, right as I was about to walk down the aisle and was jumping around and barking at the musician because he couldn’t contain his excitement. It was a funny moment and immediately washed away my nervousness.

Planning surprises.

How time consuming it was if you don’t have a wedding planner, I definitely underestimated it!

Words of wisdom.

Try and get as much as you can organised before you think you need to, the few weeks before the wedding will fly. Choose a few things that are really important to you that you want to splash out on then try and find cost efficient options for everything else where you can. The important things for us were music, flowers and food.

Last words.

A huge thank you to our family, bridal party, friends and suppliers who made the day so wonderful. We could not have done it without them.
