Real Wedding – Lily & Tom, Chapple Vale, VIC

Lily and Tom took the phrase ‘labour of love’ to a whole new meaning when it came to bringing their vision to life. Their big dreams of having a festival style celebration held at Lily’s family farm meant that they had to build, restore and set up everything from scratch but by gosh, the final outcome was glorious.

A sweet ceremony in the garden, then straight into drinks and dinner at the done up disco dairy-shed with attention paid to every detail. Guests were accommodated in set up glamping tents, espresso martinis were plentiful, the cake went down a treat, the tunes were pumping and then guests were sent home with cute, personalised tote bags and stubby holders.

Lily stunned in her backless gown from Bluebell Bridal and Tom looked ever so dapper in his YSG suit. And their entire day was caught on camera by the magic makers from Mimo Weddings.

The meeting.

We met in 2016 at a gig in Catani Gardens. Lily got there early as she wanted to see an early act/DJ and Tom happened to be there with a friend. We ended up chatting and hanging out all day and then a week later Tom invited Lily to another gig as part of Melbourne Music Week and that was it. We have been together ever since.

The ‘one’.

Lily: For me I think it was that first date at the Old Melbourne Goal as part of Melbourne Music Week. Instantly it felt different with Tom. I felt I could be myself and not worry about trying to act a certain way. It just felt easy.

The proposal.

Tom popped the question at my parents farm in the Otways, which happened to be the same site where we got married. It was in between lockdowns and we decided to get out of the city and into nature. We set up a tent in one of the paddocks and in the morning, Tom got up to make us some coffee, even though I wanted to just lie in bed and keep warm (it was cold and drizzly outside). Tom insisted I come and enjoy my coffee with him outside. Then before I could think, he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him. And I said yes!

Planning process.

The plan was to have the wedding at Lily’s parents farm in Chapple Vale, which is quite remote (approximately 3 hours outside of Melbourne). As you can imagine, this required a lot of planning and prep in order to get all our suppliers out to the site and the farm ready in time for our guests. We also wanted to have the wedding reception in the Old Dairy shed (the farm being an old dairy farm). The dairy shed was our biggest challenge as it was basically falling down and derelict when we started. However, Tom being the enthusiastic builder he is, transformed the old shed (over the course of 9 months) into the reception venue of our dreams, equipped with a bar. We also organised glamping tents, showers, generators and other amenities, places to get ready including a dressing room/make up tent, food and beverage to keep the party going all weekend, DJ and other entertainment, as well as transport options.

Style inspiration.

We both love the outdoors, camping and attending music festivals, so our dream was to have a ‘festival’ type wedding in the bush, surrounded by friends and family. We wanted to capture the essence of a festival and both have a pretty high level of attention to detail, so it was important to us that we gave our guests the best experience possible while making sure it was still a traditional wedding.

Lily drew inspiration from festival experiences and Instagram, while Tom handled a lot of the logistics and on-site set up which he drew from his time working on festivals and building projects.

The ceremony.

Our ceremony was in Lily’s parents garden at the farm. We kept it traditional but short.

The outfit.

We kept it a secret from each other and went with the flow and both picked something on our first day of looking.

Favourite moments.

Lily: Seeing different groups of friends who didn’t know each other, chatting and having fun on the day.

Tom: Seeing Lily walk down the aisle.

Wedding soundtrack.

Aisle: Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy

Reception entry: Seabird by Alessi Brothers

First dance: Gimme all your lovin by ZZtop

Funny stories or near disasters.

There was a landslide a month before our wedding on one of the main access roads that connects Apollo Bay to our Farm, where many of our guests had pre-arranged accommodation. This meant their journey to the farm was extended by 45 minutes and threw a spanner in the works for our guests that had young children.

Planning surprises.

Heaps more work than we expected! But totally worth it in the end.

Words of wisdom.

Keep your vision.
