Real Wedding – Lucy & Michael, Yarra Valley VIC

When Lucy surprised her new husband of news that they were expecting their second baby, during their photo session, an already perfect day was taken to the next level.

This Yarra Valley celebration saw a vision of simplicity, elegance and love culminate to provide everlasting memories for Lucy, Michael and their loved ones.

What we loved about this perfect pair is that they said ‘no’ to trends and instead focused on a meaningful day that completely embodied them.

With a minor dress hiccup the night before, and some sound wedding planning advice for couples set to walk down the aisle in future, this is a great story and accented beautifully by Kerri of Lovers Narrative.

In Lucy’s words…

The meeting.

We met in 2013 through Lucy’s sister and now husband who is a good friend of Michael’s. Michael asked Lucy out on a date and seven years later, the rest is history!

The ‘one’.

Lucy: I knew Michael was the one for me pretty early on in our relationship as he had all of the qualities and values I had always hoped for in a life-long partner. As our relationship progressed so did my love for him and to me that is what love is all about.

Michael: I was very much similar to Lucy. I knew pretty early that she was the one for me. She has a beautiful and caring nature about her that won me over.

The proposal.

After five years together Michael worked up the courage to get down on one knee, surprising Lucy with a romantic night out in the city.

The process.

The planning process of the wedding felt long, however we found it pretty stress free by being organised. Lucy created a folder which allowed us to keep track of payments, supplier contact details and venue information.

Style inspiration.

The inspiration behind our style of wedding was simple, timeless and classic. We wanted to be able to look back at our wedding in years to come and still love everything about it as much as we did on the day.

The outfits.

Lucy: Dress shopping for me was the least fun experience I had during the whole wedding process. I went to many different stores around Melbourne but unfortunately I never found ‘the one’ or anything close to it.

After many unsuccessful shopping trips I decided to have my dress made by the same amazingly talented woman who made my sister’s wedding dress, Donna Lee. After meeting with Donna and discussing my ideas, we worked together to create the perfect dress for me. I was after something simple and classic with a bit of a modern edge. The one thing I was really set on was having a timeless dress to hopefully avoid any of those ‘what was I thinking’ moments in years to come.

On the day of the wedding I felt like myself and to me this was so important. My dress was so comfortable and was everything I imagined and more.

Michael: I had my suit made for the occasion. The classic and timeless style was the inspiration.

Favourite moments.

Lucy: Our day was filled with many special moments that picking one is impossible. I loved having my mum walk me down the aisle, sharing the exciting news to Michael of our second child, having our son be apart of our special day and marring the man of my dreams.

Michael: Celebrating our special day with our family and close friends was amazing, however my wife surprised me with the news of our second child when having our photos taken and this moment is one that I will cherish forever.

Meaning of marriage.

Marriage to us means learning to love simply, to be supportive and understanding, to educate and be educated by one another and to find happiness with what you have.

Wedding soundtrack.

Aisle:  I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers and Sea of Love by Cat Power.

Reception entry: Real Love by Jess Glynne

First dance: Even when I’m Sleeping by Leonardo’s Bride

Funny stories (or near disasters).

Lucy: My best friend arrived at our accommodation the night before the wedding, she was shaking and looked violently ill… I was so upset because I thought she was going to tell me she was so sick she couldn’t be in the wedding. As it turns out giving her the job of transporting my wedding dress had been more stressful than first thought. Somewhere along the way my veil got stuck in the zipper of my dress bag and she was stressing! Finding out that my best friend was actually in good heath and able to attend my wedding was a relief, as for the veil situation… it was nothing a pair of scissors and glass of wine couldn’t fix.

Planning surprises.

How much time it takes to plan a wedding!

Words of wisdom.

You do you! Don’t feel you have to spend your money on pointless trends just because everyone else is doing it. The little things all add up and trends come and go all the time. Just remember your friends and family are there to celebrate with you not with what you have.
