Real Wedding – Mia & Sean, Melbourne VIC

A vision of old-world glamour with a twist of modern magic, Mia and Sean’s gorgeous gathering is equal parts visual style and heartfelt emotion. Scrolling through the dreamy images by photographer Anna Dewar, we can’t help but get lost in the understated romance of this perfectly Melbourne celebration.

Beginning deep in the botanic gardens, these two aligned souls said their I Dos against an elegant backdrop of lush greenery and blossoming floral pillars of creamy white blooms. Making their way to their venue, the iconic Cutler & Co, made for an epic portrait session against cobbled laneways, with a touch of rain to add to the ambience.

Elevating the historic feel was Mia’s choice of gown, a sleekly contemporary sheath by fashion extraordinaire Kyha Studios. A cutaway neckline and sweeping skirt make for a dynamic dream of a dress worn to radiant perfection by Mia.

Keeping their decor detailing simple allowed the rich styling of their venue to lead the aesthetic, while touches of solo candlelight added a sense of intimacy to the occasion.

Scroll on to see it all unfold.

The meeting.

Mia: I first met Sean in 2009 (when we were 14!). We reconnected in 2010 at a friend’s birthday before going on our first date (to the movies – cute!). We made it official a couple of weeks after that.

The ‘one’.

Mia and Sean: I think we knew fairly early on. We’ve always had such a wonderful connection and been open with how we feel about one another!

The proposal.

Sean: I surprised Mia with a trip to Byron Bay and a stay at her dream hotel for our 10-year anniversary. On entering our room, there was a beautiful bunch of flowers from Mia’s favourite florist, along with sweet treats and drinks. I got down on one knee and proposed, and Mia said yes!

Planning process.

Mia: We found most of our inspiration through Instagram. I found information on real weddings the most useful!

Style inspiration.

Mia: I love a neutral palette, so I wanted to keep the wedding classic and timeless. I didn’t want to look back on our photos in 20 years and wonder, “What was I thinking!?”. Our flowers were white and green, and we kept all furniture and décor rather minimal. Our ceremony and reception locations are so beautiful as is; they didn’t need much else!

The ceremony.

Mia and Sean: Our ceremony was held at the beautiful Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden at King’s Domain. We had been researching venues, and when we first visited, we just fell in love!

We were nervous about rain (being an Autumn wedding) and were checking BOM hourly in the days prior! Luckily the rain held off until just as we made it to the reception at Cutler and Co.

It was so special to have our family and closest friends there to share the day with us in such gorgeous locations.

The outfit.

Sean: Classic black tuxedo!

Mia: I went to a few bridal stores before finding “the dress” at Kyha Studios. I love how simple and timeless my dress is!

Favourite moments.

Sean: When Mia arrived!

Mia: When I saw Sean standing at the end of the aisle.

Meaning of marriage.

Mia and Sean: We see marriage as making a commitment to love, support and care for one another. It’s about keeping a smile on each other’s faces through the good and bad.

Wedding soundtrack.

Mia: Our band played a slower tempo acoustic version of Can’t Help Falling In Love as I walked down the aisle and Just The Two Of Us during the signing.

Funny stories or near disasters.

Sean: My shirt didn’t fit, luckily borrowed one from my father-in-law the night before!

Planning surprises.

Mia and Sean: The sheer amount of work!

Words of wisdom.

Mia and Sean: Work as a team!
