BARUNAH PLAINS

A historic private estate wedding venue near Geelong

Barunah Plains has been standing since 1846. The homestead, the bluestone cottages, the woolshed, the shearers’ quarters, the stables, the formal gardens – all of it has had nearly two centuries to settle into the landscape, and it shows. This is a working property, offering space, flexibility and impeccably maintained character.

Thirty minutes from Geelong and ninety minutes from Melbourne, the estate hosts only a handful of weddings each year, all on exclusive hire.

You get the entire property, every building, every lawn, every paddock, and the freedom to bring in your own suppliers or work with a team recommended by Barunah Plains.

Ceremony and reception spaces at Barunah Plains

The range here is exceptional. Ceremonies can be held in the formal gardens, on any of the homestead lawns, down by the creek, or against the bushland vista in the paddocks.

Receptions work in a marquee overlooking the creek and original homestead, in the atmospheric bluestone shearing shed, or across any configuration of the property’s outbuildings.

Guest numbers flex from an intimate 20 to well over 200, with the estate licensed for up to 1,000, which gives you room to think big if you want to. There’s a late curfew, so the night doesn’t end early.

Wedding catering at Barunah Plains

Full BYO catering. Barunah encourages couples to find a caterer that matches their style — luxe sit-down dinner, shared feasting, food trucks — and can recommend tried-and-tested options if you’d rather not start from scratch. The flexibility is genuine and extends across the full supplier list.

On-site accommodation at Barunah Plains for wedding weekends

Seventy-six beds across three distinct spaces mean most of your guest list can stay on-site, and glamping can fill any gaps, turning the property into your own village for the weekend.

The Homestead sleeps 22 across 10 bedrooms, with a formal dining room, sitting room, billiards room, swimming pool, and tennis court. The Jackaroo Quarters offer six ensuite queen rooms for 12 guests. And the Shearers’ Quarters house 42 guests across 16 bedrooms, with a commercial kitchen, dining room, and large living space that doubles as recovery headquarters the next morning.

For guests not staying on-site, Geelong is 30 minutes away and Inverleigh just 10, with bus transport easy to arrange.
