Rooted in history, this age-old art form traces its origins back centuries to the ancient Egyptians, with Pharaohs and nobility adorning intricately pleated fine linens. Hand pleating, still considered the gold standard in couture, remains a coveted technique by European fashion houses for its elusive blend of softness and precision. Unfortunately, the skills required for this intricate technique are slowly fading away, with only a handful of artisans worldwide still practicing. Speciality Pleaters, established in Melbourne in 1925, stands as one of only two studios in Australia continuing the tradition of hand pleating. Elissa Marie Design holds immense appreciation for the artisans preserving this fine art, and takes pride in supporting them.
