Real Wedding – Lizzy & Chris, South Melbourne VIC

Lizzy and Chris love the cool weather, and their winter’s day celebration oozed the cosy romance that only the colder seasons can bring.

The use of candlelight, cosy fireplaces, a colour palette of muted, jeweled tones and the use of berry-hued blues, all culminated to create the warm and inviting wedding these lover’s planned for.

Keeping a handle on their planning, Lizzy offers some brilliant advice for brides and groom’s to be, and says that their loved ones all sharing the Hora on their day remains one of their favourite memories.

In their words…

The meeting.

We meet nearly nine years ago in Perth at Lizzy’s friend’s 20^thbirthday party. Chris walked up the stairs into the bar and immediately caught my eye (Lizzy). We started chatting and then dancing almost immediately after meeting!

The ‘one’.

Chris: when we were apart for around a month after initially meeting

Lizzy: As soon as I saw him walk into the bar, love at first sight!

The proposal.

We were travelling through Europe last summer and when we were staying in Amalfi, we decided one night to buy some antipasto, a bottle of champagne and a candle from the local deli to have a romantic dinner on the rooftop balcony of our guesthouse. As we were watching the sunset over the Mediterranean, Chris got down on one knee to ask if I would marry him. He improvised a ring out of ribbon from the candle packaging.

The process.

I (Lizzy) planned all aspects of the wedding. Over 10 months or so we slowly chipped away at a few tasks each week, so it wouldn’t be so overwhelming leading up to the big day. Having a lot of time to plan was important for us so we were able to make the right decisions in a relaxed environment and without too much pressure. Having a background in managing events was a big help to keep us on track and (nearly) within budget! The lead up was very calm and exciting, everything was accounted for and ready to go so we could enjoy the weeks in the lead up with our friends and family.

Style inspiration.

As our wedding was held in the beginning of winter, we wanted the space to feel warm, cosy and inviting. During this time of year we love to travel to the snow and so we were inspired by one of our favourite activities after a hard day shredding the slopes – an apres-ski drink by the fireplace – to help us emulate the vibe we were after. We achieved this by the use of lots and lots of candles, using the venue’s own fireplace and a colour palette of muted jeweled tones for the furniture (lots of soft lounge areas for comfort) and florals to tie it all in together nicely.

The look.

I (Lizzy) envisioned a simple, modern and romantic outfit with bold statement accessories to supplement the look. I went for large gold/pearl earrings hoops, mirror-gold pumps and a white feather jacket to keep warm.

With regards to finding the dress, my sister in law and I went straight to High St, Armadale. I tried on only three dresses and found ‘the one’ at the third dress. There were no hesitations at all, it was just felt right and was meant to be!

Chris had a beautifully tailored three-piece suit made by Oscar Hunt. He wore his R.M Williams that I (Lizzy) bought for his birthday a few years ago.

A commitment to spend our lives together, it is a way to honour the love we have for each other.

At our first look photoshoot, Chris was nearly drenched with water from a bucket a tenant was emptying out from one of the apartments above where he was waiting to meet me!

Planning surprises.

How much time, dedication and effort it takes to plan a wedding. It’s all worth it in the end!

Words of wisdom.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Make the most of how the day plays out and just roll with it. Also, highly recommend organising a first-look with the photographer if you’re the type of couple who experience FOMO! It meant we could party as soon as the ceremony was over – best decision ever.

Finally, do what makes you happy as a couple – if you don’t want a wedding cake, don’t have one! If you don’t think there is a need for favours but want to add some flair to the guests experience, organise surprise cocktails or have a whisky bar! There are so many fun and creative ways to make the wedding truly your own.
