You arrive with a folder of Instagram saves, a half-formed idea about sleeves, and no real sense of how any of it becomes a dress. That’s exactly the right way to walk into d’Italia. A couture bridal atelier in Malvern, they’ve spent more than 25 years turning other people’s vague, specific, entirely personal ideas into gowns made to their exact measurements, with work that’s appeared in Vogue.
Design your own wedding dress in Melbourne
From there it’s collaborative. You’ll sit down one-on-one with a designer to talk through silhouettes, fabrics and budget, have your measurements taken, and work through initial sketches until the design settles. Because d’Italia is also a fabric house, with agents sourcing from Italy, France and other textile capitals every six to eight weeks, you’re choosing from current-season Italian silks and genuine French lace held in small runs that won’t be repeated.
Pricing is refreshingly plain: you pay for the fabric and the dressmaking, with no designer fee layered on top. Custom gowns run from $3,000, or from $3,500 once French lace, beading or embellishment comes into it, while mother-of-the-bride gowns, evening wear and suits sit around $2,500. Fittings are unlimited, so the fit keeps being refined for as long as it needs to be.
Alongside the custom work there are five ready-to-wear collections, including the 2026 Lumiere range, plus bridesmaids, mother of the bride and groom gowns, veils and accessories. Sizing is inclusive, appointments are one-on-one across weekdays and weekends, and interstate couples can consult by Zoom. Their seamstresses are spread across Melbourne so fittings land somewhere convenient, though they do book out twelve to eighteen months ahead.
