As far as unexpected wedding venues go, a former prison would place high on the list.
But when the bride behind the out-of-the-box concept is an experienced event planner, the adventurous choice delivers astonishing results.
Angela and Robbie’s one-of-a-kind celebration at Old Melbourne Gaol leaned into the unique architecture and character of the building, without being thematic.
The space was reimagined in every sense of the word with pink-hued uplighting, linen and floral arrangements by Sugar Bee Flowers contrasting the cobblestone walls and floors to create both interest and intimacy.
An extraordinary concept requires a photographer who can meet and expand upon the boundless creative possibilities and Alex of Motta Weddings was the perfect person for the job.

We met at the start of 2020, just before the COVID lockdowns. It was a modern Tinder love story that consisted of dinner dates at home and leisurely walks around the block. We figured if we could handle being together 24/7 during such a challenging time, then we could get through anything!
I think it hit me when I met Robbie’s amazing family. I realised I had found an incredible life partner who came from the kind of family I could only dream of having as in-laws.
We bought our first home in June 2023, which was an absolute dream of ours. It’s a beautiful property with a creek and a bridge out back. Just two days before Christmas, Robbie lined the bridge with petals and LED candles and proposed on the other side of the creek. He even included our newly adopted dog, who we’d brought home just a few months earlier. It was everything I wanted—intimate, private, and in the home we both love so much.
I am a senior wedding planner/coordinator, so I was in my absolute element planning our wedding! I loved every minute of planning and had the advantage of working with hundreds of suppliers through my job, which made choosing professional, reliable, and talented vendors much easier. Of course, there was a bit of family drama in the lead up to the day, but on the day, everyone had a fantastic time.
Working in a winery-based venue myself, we wanted to go in the complete opposite direction. My husband suggested the Old Melbourne Gaol, and from the moment we toured it, we were sold. Its uniqueness and stunning architecture left us in awe. With the help of Scott Pickett Events and Venues Live, we styled the venue beautifully using soft pinks, white Bentwood chairs, and uplighting to create contrast against the dark cobblestone floors and walls.
During the planning process, I found real weddings to be the most inspiring. Seeing what other couples valued and what worked well for them helped me have a clearer vision for our wedding.
We opted for a simple, intimate ceremony at the Registry Office with close friends and extended family. It was short, sweet and exactly what we wanted. One of the most special moments for me was walking down the aisle with my mum to Robbie—it was incredibly meaningful to still have that moment at the Registry Office.
Robbie chose his suit from Oscar Hunt after extensive research. Their service was exceptional, and the custom-made suit fit him perfectly.
Finding my dress was a bit trickier because I kept second-guessing myself —thanks Instagram and TikTok! But once I visited Riva Bridal and met the designer Kim, I knew I’d found the one. Her fabrics were incredible, and being fitted by the designer herself was a treat. I went for a sleek, minimalist gown that was perfect for dancing the night away.
It’s impossible to pick just one, but our reception entrance stands out. We entered as husband and wife from the second level of the Gaol, dancing along the railing to Hey Baby by DJ Otzi. Our guests are still raving about it!
Marriage, to us, is about having someone by your side through all of life’s ups and downs. It’s about building a life together that reflects our shared dreams and goals while having fun along the way.

During pre-dinner drinks, one of our guests accidentally got locked in one of the padded cells at the Gaol! There was a brief moment of panic as they searched for the key, but thankfully, he was freed. He was mostly worried about his beer running out!
Six months before the wedding, our caterer/coordinator informed us they wouldn’t be renewing their contract with the Old Melbourne Gaol, which sent us into a whirlwind of emotions. Thankfully, Scott Pickett Group and Venues Live picked up where they left off. Our planning and tasting experience at one of their CBD restaurants was world class and nothing was too much trouble. We were really surprised by the high-quality service both leading up and on the night of the wedding, it honestly exceeded all our expectations.
Don’t sweat the small stuff, and trust your suppliers- they’re professionals for a reason. If your venue offers a preferred supplier list please use it—they’re highly recommended for good reason.
Be flexible when things don’t go exactly as planned; sometimes, unexpected changes can turn out even better than you thought.
Also, consider having a backup guest list, as people will cancel at the last minute.
Also if you are thinking of having a different venue to the norm- DO IT! Our guests were blown away by the uniqueness of the Old Melbourne Gaol, and it made for an unforgettable experience.

I was fortunate to have already worked with most of the suppliers I selected through my job, so I knew they were both professional and reliable. I also relied on their recommendations when choosing additional vendors, which was really helpful.
