Real Wedding – Hannah & Nick, Macedon VIC

The buzzwords around Hannah and Nick’s stunning soiree were colour, spring and gardens. Evocative in themselves, but nothing close to the stunningly glorious celebration that unfolds.

Abundant florals by Prunella cascade down tablescapes and across the crips clear span marquee in hues of soft pastel pinks, lilacs and cornflower blue. The effect is transcendent, encompassing the guests in the gardens surrounding them even while inside.

Nick looks dapper in his white tuxe while Hannah cycles through a series of gowns that are as stunning as they are perfect for each moment. Her mother’s gown for the ceremony is a meaning-filled moment, while the floral perfection of her Oscar de la Renta gown is exquisite. And, of course, every bride needs to be free to dance the night away, and what could be more fun than a gold mini?!

Photographer extraordinaire Katie Harmsworth captures to perfection the golden light and fresh, effortless romance of the aesthetics, as well as the beautifully authentic emotion permeating every element.

The meeting.

A mutual friend had attempted to set us up a couple of years prior, but we actually met via the dating apps. It was about two weeks before going into lockdown in Melbourne, so it was a bit touch and go!

The ‘one’.

When meeting each other’s friends and families. Big believer that you don’t just marry the individual!!

The proposal.

Nick asked me to go for a walk down the front drive of my family’s farm at about 6am. He’s never suggested we do anything like that, so I knew what was coming. I can’t actually remember what happened after that – it is all a bit of a haze!

Style inspiration.

Spring, gardens, colour. We are not particularly traditional, but there were elements that I wanted to respect and include. The garden at Bolobek was the primary inspiration, and that influenced the style and that of the bridesmaids, florals and overall aesthetic.

The ceremony.

It was at home, in the garden with typical volatile Macedon weather. To be able to get married in a space that has so much history and is so beautiful is such a privilege.

The look.

I had three outfits (low-maintenance gal!). My dress for the ceremony was actually my mum’s wedding dress, which I had altered slightly by removing the arms (and letting out the waistband). I had not intended to wear a white dress, let alone her dress, but I tried it on a couple of weeks prior to the wedding, and it just felt right. I had Alice from Alice Haute Couture in South Yarra do the alterations – she is a queen!

My second dress (which was originally intended to be my wedding dress) was by Oscar De La Renta. I had fallen in love with the dress a couple of years ago and always imagined wearing it on my wedding day. I bought it via Far Fetch, and it was 50% off and the last one in my size, so I felt like it was fate. I adore this dress with my whole heart – it’s just magic.

My third dress was by Self Portrait and I just felt like I needed some bling and something short as I love to party and don’t need material getting in that way of that.

Favourite moment.

The best man speeches. In full transparency, I was a little nervous, but the boys aced it, and it was the only time I cried the whole day.

Meaning of marriage.

Compromise. A lot of hard work. Home.

Wedding soundtrack.

Aisle (flower girls and bridesmaids): Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve

Dad and I walking down the aisle: I Do by Abba

First dance: Fat Bottom Girls by Queen

Funny stories or near disasters.

We had bushfires surrounding us on the Wednesday and then torrential rain and storms the night before. That tested me a bit!

Planning surprises.

We said “no presents” and the backlash from guests on that was surprising. I thought they would have liked it!

Words of wisdom.

Figure out your budget early. Don’t worry about the weather. Just relish it.

It’s indisputable that a marquee wedding can give you the versatility, blank canvas backdrop and fresh feel that is hard to find elsewhere. But knowing where to begin when planning a marquee wedding can be confusing. We’ve got you – here are our top tips to create a party under the stars, without the open air stress.
